I hope that I am not stepping over any boundaries here. But I could not figure out where to share this great quote without being out of place in the "Ethics" thread. I am certainly touching on Psychology a little in my social presence group, but I had to share this here.

Milton, I just visited your SL labs. The Games are great fun.

I enjoyed "Hip, hype and hope" although it does seem a little dated - particularly in its focus on virtual reality. My feeling is that the avatar approach used in SL, WoW, and many other platforms has taken us in a different direction psychologically than the earlier VR work promised to do. In particular, the creation, operation, and maintenance of an avatar seems like the cultivation of an "alternative self" whereas early VR kept the original self but transported it into a new environment.

I agree. It's a far cry from the origins of what AI was 'meant' to be. But then that's always the case I guess.
