Center for Social Presence Meeting #2

We had a great time. Cathy Arreguin/Mari Asturias introduced the space that she developed for training educators. She was quite generous in sharing her lessons learned, providing us with tried and true tips and tricks as well as resources (Oh! did we love those!!!). The hour lite… Continue

Bradburyville, hosted by the Alliance Library System

I CAN'T believe I forgot about it. I showed up at the end of the lecture, only to embarrass myself with a talk button still on (from a conference chat on Friday). ARggggg! Ray Bradbury is one of my favorite authors. I hope that the lecture was archived somewhere. Actually, I really need to stop saying this. Obviously, I am chasing archives lately. But it is all the fault of all these fantastic events being put together!!!! I could not resist to take a couple of pictures of Crap Mariner. John had… Continue

Met@Morph Comic Con in SL

The first of what hopefully will be a grand venue. Grand speakers, some tech issues (but eh...without it, you would wonder what's wrong with SL, or how much this cost from your karma points), and good fun. (I still couldn't fire my watermelon launcher! Very frustrating. Granted, Harper had disappeared quite conveniently after her deeds.....No matter. I"ll be waiting with my watermelon launcher....:-D I posted a few pics here, but you can see all of them here:… Continue

I would value having a copy of your English summary of the Distance Learning Conference on Nov 10, 2008 at SecondLife, since I missed the live event. Kindly write me at beaodonnell@optonline.net.

Many thanks!

I came across the concept of "social realism" when reading curator's notes at an exhibition in Glasgow, Scotland, some years ago. Subsequent to that (very brief) exposure, I have seen it discussed in a number of articles about its use in the development of gaming scenarios. Alexander Galloway has an article entitled Social Realism in Gaming that you might want to read. I believe that his conclusion was that there is a "congruence requirement" that must be fulfilled before social realism can be achieved in gaming environments, i.e., that there must be some kind of fidelity of context between the gamer in gaming situ and his or her r/l social reality.

Sabine Reljic/Willow Shenlin, I am two weeks old in Second Life terms and investigating it on an extremely part time basis whilst teaching full time at a new institution. Until I'm more familiar with the environment and its possibilities, I am probably not the best person/avatar to be sharing observations with respect to the implications of instructional communication in avatar-mediated environments.

With respect to using "the" network theory to explain social interaction and effective instructional communication in SL, I can see that you have a similar issue as that which you have described in your second message with respect to using terms appropriately. As you well know, a number of academic areas have "claimed" the concept of network theories. However, although operational definitions are similar in most cases, they are not the same. If we are talking about network theory in the broadest sense, as social networks with connecting nodes (i.e., individuals and/or organizations) that are bound to one another by a number of shared characteristics (friendship, values, commodities, etc.), then we can certainly use such a theory in a manner such as I believe you are suggesting.

I think the problem with 1.20 is that LL, like many software outfits, is putting more and more demand on the hardware. In other words, superseding, or obsoleting, my machines. This may narrow the audience instead of broadening it. Also, I haven't managed to figure out the new camera controls.

Hi Sabine,
Thanks for the welcome! Actually, I'm looking into doing a phenomenology of the experience of teaching/conducting training in SL. Since I was just "born" into SL back in early June, this is still new to me--I'm just soaking it all in (and reading everything I can get my hands on!). :o)

Love your M&M! LOL!

Hi Sabine,

We're developing a new, improved Salamander HUD and, because of lots of spam, started the Salamander wiki over again - you and all will need to register again by requesting an account in the top right of the Salamander wiki homepage. The new HUD and wiki should be MUCH improved from the old - so I hope it's worth the hassle! Let's get together and chat about MERLOT soon, yes? :)

Don't have it online right now but should be attached. Bonnie and I did the same course so we've been aware of each other's work in SL over the last year.thesislast draft.pdf

Hi Sabine and thanks for your welcome! I think that we have to view virtual worlds as the embodiment of a new visual language with many properties common to languages we already know such as television and film but with some unique opportunities for creation and engagement also. My recent thesis was focused on looking at non-verbal cues to help create a sense of presence and engagement. I'd be happy to post it someplace if that would be of any help.

Hello Willow. I just signed on to Second Life and want to use it to give instructions to some of our employees. However, I can't even change the clothes on the avitar! I signed up for Premium Monthly billing at like $9.00 something a month and I thought that would allow me to do some things. I'd like to be able to do what you were showing with lip sync, but I'm afraid I'm far from that. Do you have any tips for how to start out? Thanks, Becky

Excellent. I hope you are enjoying NC. I am a doc student at ECU (Ed Leadership). I am getting close to dissertation proposal time and I am thinking about doing something with SL. Isn't your dis about SL? What are your research questions?
