Comment by BlueWings Hayek on June 25, 2008 at 10:48pm - Even though I have worked with incarcerated youth for several years, I don't think I have much of a perspective beyond the information I gather from working with them a few hours a week. Though when encountering examples of what seems to be from face value a poor education or even illiteracy, it really seems to me such a systemic problem. I really think working with the incarcerated in virtual worlds have a lot of potential to bring out ways of learning and understanding our environment that traditional classrooms are so poor at doing successfully.

Deborah Fields is a doctoral student at the University of California, Los Angeles Graduate School of Education & Information Studies. Influenced by her gaming experiences, her main research interests include studying youths' identities and informal learning and teaching practices across spaces - including virtual, school, home, and informal spaces such as clubs and religious communities. Over the past two years she had spent innumerable hours in Whyville, a virtual world for tweens.
