Description

Traditional social presence theories (traditional as in classroom-based, face-to-face) and the few mediated social presence studies (videoconferencing, Blackboard...) have proven that social presence can increase student satisfaction and perceived learning outcomes (Gunawardena & Zittle, 1997; Richardson & Swan, 2003). But there has not been much done on social presence in learning events via desktop 3D immersive environments, such as SL. One recent and promising theory of mediated social presence is the Networked Minds Theory of Social Presence (Harms & Biocca, 2004).

Immediacy is closely related to the concept of social presence. In an environment such as SL in which the instructor and the students' communication is mediated via avatars, which immediacy behaviors support communication, attention and motivation, and promote students' collaboration? What real life immediacy behaviors transfer in SL? or how do they translate?

Let's use this space to talk and share ideas, research and practice as well as to brainstorm on enhancing learning experiences and outcomes with a better knowledge of the social presence affordances of SL.

Hi Sabine - Thank you for the greeting the other day :-) I'm looking forward to some of the discussions here. Rockcliffe is also starting to host more forums in these broad topic areas so I'm hoping that maybe there is some collaborative opportunities here as well beyond the discussion group. I'm currently working towards a Doctorate through UOP Online examining leadership behaviours in the face of disruptive innovation and I'm specifically using SL as the environment of study. So hopefully some overlap here :-)

I am currently working on my dissertation and the more I dig into this topic, the bigger it gets. So here is this space in which I hope that you will share, question and comment on each other's questions, comments and issues.
I believe that this group can learn, discover, and teach others how to be better 3D virtual world instructors!

I am looking forward to our discussions, here, on Social Presence in Virtual Worlds. Welcome.
