This explosion of virtual worlds for kids is very much about staking out territory for the attention of young people. At the moment, the marketers and toy companies have the money and the upper hand. But I think there'll be a backlash that will balance out the need to sell products and the need to create safe spaces for kids to play, socialize and learn without being constantly marketed to. It's an old struggle in a new medium and the rules have yet to be written.

Comment by Scott Merrick on May 7, 2008 at 6:05am: Still wrapping my brain around balancing parents' concern over the glut of commercial exploitation of their children with the clearly attractive advantages virtual worlds have to offer toward engaging students of all ages in their own learning. I hope members of this group can help me sort out the options and perhaps define new ones.
